Development Cooperation: Priorities
Local Economies
-
helping rural populations (family farm operations and crafts workshops) to better control their political and socio-economic environment for example by taking direct control of the management of their water resources.
-
supporting the efforts of peasants to transform and modernize production systems and tools
-
working with local research institutions with innovative approaches to transforming and commercializing agricultural products
-
reinforcing socio-professional organizations in defending the interests of farmers and craftsmen
-
supporting the crafts industry and professional training in handicrafts
-
supporting the networking of public and private decision makers at the local level to encourage them to participate in the elaboration of framework conditions such as laws and regulations favouring the development of local economies
The main objective of this program is to encourage the decentralization of medical services and to bring them under the direct management of local communities, groups and regions. To achieve this, the SDC
-
contributes to improve local health facilities (community health centre, group and regional hospitals) and the system of social welfare
-
invests particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the supply of essential medicines, the training of nursing staff, the support of community health associations and favouring traditional medicine
As with public health, this program aims at encouraging local management and the strengthening of local competencies. Swiss development cooperation
-
supports the decentralization of basic education: community schools, public schools, development education centres, literacy centres
-
encourages the involvement of locally elected officials and of parents and teachers associations
-
aims to improve the quality of basic education by setting up a strategy of continuing education for teachers at community schools as well as the promotion and production of locally developed teaching materials
-
places particular importance on people excluded from the education system (uneducated children and rural children taken out of school) by promoting basic education as a complement to pre-professional and professional training
-
sets up a scholarship programme to support the university studies of young men and women from underprivileged rural families and to encourage them to maintain a close link with their home communities
In case of necessity, Swiss cooperation can mobilize the SDC Humanitarian Aid Department.
Cross-cutting themes and priorities
-
The cross-cutting themes of the SDC are the promotion of gender equality, the environment and governance
-
SDC priorities are the prevention of HIV/AIDS, conflict transformation, new technologies and culture.
-
If needed, the SDC can mobilize humanitarian aid.
