Millennium Declaration: a pact between nations to defeat human poverty
More than a billion people are living in profound poverty on less than one dollar a day. With the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, member states of the United Nations have pledged to reduce extreme poverty by half by the year 2015. Also Switzerland is contributing to the achievement of these goals.
The Millennium Declaration commits rich and poor countries alike to do everything to combat poverty, to promote human dignity and equality and to realize peace, democracy and ecological sustainability.
The Millennium Development Goals
The Millennium Declaration contains eight main goals – the so-called Millennium Development Goals (MDG). With
measurable goals all countries and international organizations are committed to take action.
