The floods which quite literally inundated Pakistan in summer 2010 were the greatest natural disaster in the country's history. After the emergency relief delivered and the measures taken to assist the affected populations in getting through the winter, the SDC is planning a number of reconstruction projects in the domains of civil engineering and water.

Laying the groundwork for sustainable development
The countries of South Asia and the Himalaya region are in a state of upheaval, caught between the traditional and the modern, a situation which has frequently created tensions some of which have
turned into armed conflicts. Political instability and restricted economic growth are often the result. A significant number of people in South Asia live in poverty even though the countries show
good development potential.
Switzerland's development cooperation activities in the region aim at diminishing poverty, developing structures for a sustainable use of resources, supporting good governance and reducing social
tensions. Switzerland's humanitarian aid activities focus on South Asia where humanitarian emergencies arise following such natural disasters as drought and floods. In areas where armed conflict has
caused refugees, Switzerland supports the victims through deliveries of food and medical care.
The SDC Humanitarian Aid Department is currently running programmes in Afghanistan and India.
