"Every mine I clear saves a life"
"No magic model for successful development"
Development experts discuss how Asia is catching up, or rack their brains over strategies for Africa. But almost nobody mentions Latin America any more. Javier Santiso, Director and Chief Economist with the OECD Development Centre in Paris, sees this as an omission.

Supporting poverty reduction
Around 450 million people live in between the Rio Grande and Tierra del Fuego, a continent of vast political, economic and socio-cultural dimensions. To get the most impact from its development
cooperation efforts, the SDC focuses on only a few Latin American countries with a limited number of activities.
Its main programme is poverty reduction. The poor should be able to improve their situations by developing economically and being able to express their interests and assert their rights. Overcoming
poverty means reducing relative poverty by taking steps to counter inequalities in distribution.
Strategic documents and guidelines
Supporting Latin America: What is an appropriate contribution by the SDC as the agency for official Swiss development assistance? How can the
SDC get the most impact from its contribution in view of its institutional competencies and capacities? The following strategy is intended for use as a guideline.
