Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS
The Joint United Nations Programme on
HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, which was started in 1996 promotes and coordinates the fight against the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. UNAIDS is supported by the following institutions: UNICEF, UNDP,
UNFPA, UNHCR, WHO,
UNESCO, World Bank, UNODC (Büro UN Office on Drugs and Crime), WFP and ILO.
UNAIDS concentrates and strengthen the efforts of these organizations to achieve the following goals:
- Preventing the spread of the HIV virus,
- Improvements in the medical care of people already living with HIV/AIDS,
- Reducing the social and economic impact of the pandemic.
The goals pursued by UNAIDS correspond to Swiss priorities in development cooperation and humanitarian aid. As a multilateral organization UNAIDS has the advantage over individual countries in
that, thanks to broad support, it can address culturally sensitive issues more easily.
In 2012, Switzerland supported UNAIDS with a contribution of CHF 5 million. The total biennal budget 2012-2013 of UNAIDS is USD 485 million.
