Bangladesh: controlled labour migration brings added value for all concerned

Migrant labour is the second most important economic factor for Bangladesh: several million Bangladeshis work abroad, notably in the Gulf states, and thanks to their remittances the lives of their families are improved.

Despite its importance labour migration is virtually unregulated in Bangladesh. The SDC is currently supporting the authorities in the elaboration and implementation of a migration policy.

The project includes recruitment processes, the preparation of would-be migrants, their actual departure and the protection of migrants in host countries. It also extends to the migrants’ return and successful reintegration.

An innovative approach
As well as helping Bangladesh with guidelines for migration policy the project provides for the implementation of services such as the training of officials in rural communities, so that they can provide useful advice to would-be migrants. The project is accompanied by measures to promote education in Bangladesh. Better education would enable migrants to find more skilled jobs in the host countries, earning more for themselves and for the homeland.
