Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right. Yet many people, particularly in rural regions of Eastern Europe, still have no access to clean water or adequate sanitation. Governments face huge technical, administrative and economic challenges. Where infrastructure exists, it is increasingly falling into disrepair, the quality of the water is deteriorating, and water itself is becoming an ever-scarcer resource.
